ABSOLUTELY NEVER buy a dog from Bill's. Any of them (there are three - New Bern, Havelock, and MHC). I used to work there - PM me if you'd like more information. Puppy Mills are illegal...just putting it out there. You're much better off at the shelter, looking on petfinder, or going with a REPUTABLE breeder. Good luck on your pup search! :)

nikki --- 211 days ago -

I hate hate hate bills. *cough* waste of money *cough*

**Kathy with a K** --- 210 days ago -

We got my daughter's hamster from there.

Sarah --- 210 days ago -

I work at an animal hospital and I must agree... Please don't support bills pet shop!!

bunny --- 210 days ago -

I went in there yesterday and about puked. The cages were dirty and the whole store stunk. That place has went down hill in the last 3 yrs.

Kelsi --- 210 days ago -

If you're looking for a pup, there are several litters at the new Bern shelter, much cheaper than bills, probably just as healthy.

Noel --- 210 days ago -

probably just as healthy. Probably more healthy, when you consider how the animals at Bill's are treated!

SweetHeart --- 210 days ago -

New Bern Animal Shelter's pups probably have parvo the one we got bout 2 weeks ago does and i no they dont treat em.

Noel --- 210 days ago -

Isn't Parvo a very contagious disease? Of course it's going to be likely that strays who've been abandoned to live on the streets would have a disease like that, or their offspring would, and it is true that it'll probably spread to a few other animals in the shelter, but .. There's just no comparison. The animals at Bill's are mistreated, and even if a dog IS sick, it's so much better that it spend the last few days of its life in a safe, loving environment than being stuck in a cage, starving on the street, or roughly handled by the people trying to peddle it to customers.

Karnagia-a --- 210 days ago -

Or put into a freezer to die so that the owner doesn't have to 'bother' with vet visits.

Karnagia-a --- 210 days ago -

Parvo is treatable. Genetic deformities from overbreeding are not. Parvo is highly contagious. HIGHLY. So if one dog in the shelter has it, it will spread very quickly to any that are not vaccinated. Shelters work hard to prevent the start and spread of this disease so please don't let the 'thought' of one (of many) illness stray you from saving a dogs life. I was down at the Carteret Shelter yesterday (on Hibbs Rd) volunteering and there are some BEAUTIFUL dogs out there. There's a purebred Sheltie and a purebred male Boxer to name two of them.

Noel --- 210 days ago -

Or put into a freezer to die so that the owner doesn't have to 'bother' with vet visits. I hope that person develops a tumor. And I hope their families stuff him/her in a freezer to die to save them the chemo treatments. F*cking DISGUSTING.

~*MarLa Singer*~ --- 210 days ago -

Or put into a freezer to die so that the owner doesn't have to 'bother' with vet visits. That is absolutely terrible. How can people sit back and let that happen?!

Lorena --- 210 days ago -

If you are 100 percent sure that inhumane treatment like putting an animal into a freezer to die goes on than it is your responsibility to report that to the proper authorities!!!!

Karnagia-a --- 210 days ago -

Please don't speak to me like you know what I have or haven't done. This has been a longstanding battle that has involved everyone from the ASPCA to law enforcement. I know what my responsibilities are. ETA: I'm not trying to sound like a crab apple but it offends me that somebody would think I didn't actually report what I knew went on while I worked there.

♥Ericka♥ --- 210 days ago -

we got our dog from the shelter there on Hibbs road,he had his health issues, but was such a cutie we brought him home and hes 100% better, wouldnt trade him for the world. me and my dh refuse to buy a dog from a pet store,we would prefer to go to animal shelter.

Lorena --- 210 days ago -

Karnagia-a, I'm sorry. I didn't see any indication that it had been reported. I think the atrocity of it caused me to react so strongly. Surely, with the appropriate authorities involved, that practice would have been stopped. I can't even grasp how someone is capable of such horrendous torture and still be allowed to gain profit from animals.I know animals have very few rights, but Channel 9 news should have been involved so that people would realize what is going on in their own backyards. I appreciate you letting us know. I'll never spend another dime there and I'll be letting other people know as well. Is the current owner the same person?

007 --- 210 days ago -

I've never had any problems with any pets I've gotten at a shelter but I've also adopted them understanding the conditions if there were problems. We have gotten 2 cats and 2 dogs from the shelters on Hibbs and here on Old Airport Rd.

Karnagia-a --- 210 days ago -

You would be really surprised what can be pushed under a rug when you have enough money and 'power' in a community. The founder (Bill) has passed on ownership to his son and daughter. His son owns New Bern and is the best of the three stores. Havelock and MHC are the ones you should steer clear from. But personally I never shop at any of them. The money all filters back to the same business.

Lorena --- 210 days ago -

Well, you certainly opened my eyes. Thank you.

Kelsi --- 210 days ago -

For those of you who shop at bills and don't want to anymore, there are two very clean stores (neither sell dogs) nearby. There is obviously petsmart in morehead, and Terrificpets in the james city part of new Bern. Terrific pets is right next to the pizza hut, across from the hundai (however it's spelt) dealership. Both are clean and well respected.

Karnagia-a --- 210 days ago -

Terrific Pets is a great store! I can't speak for them but one of the reasons I ADORE PetSmart is the fact that they do SO much for animals. Adoptions, charities, etc. You will never find a puppy or kitten 'for sale' at a PS store.

~*RMof2*~ --- 209 days ago -

I remember I use to work at a small pet shop when I was younger and my boss use to get dogs from an amish breeder. Once we started noticing problems with the dogs we no longer went through a breeder and the ONLY time we had dogs in was when customers would come in with their "oops" puppies and ask us to find them homes. It wasn't exactly adoption but they were dogs that would have been sent to shelters if my boss didn't take them in.. Same thing with kittens. They were all customer drop offs and we took VERY good care of them. I store never stunk. We had a worker that was hired to be there 9am-5pm and their sole job was to clean clean clean.. If a puppy pooped.. clean it up. If the puppy stepped in it's poo.. time for a bath! For the amount that Bills sells their dogs for you'd think the could afford a vet bill for a sick pup, or hire a worker to maintain the cleanliness of the store!
